About PUSKAPA

There are many ways to protect children. We do it by working on and promoting evidence-based solutions.

PUSKAPA (Center on Child Protection and Wellbeing at Universitas Indonesia) is run by interdisciplinary researchers, policy analysts, and program managers who are dedicated to equate opportunity for all, especially the vulnerable. We do this through research that informs us in assisting formulation of effective and inclusive policies, improving governance of systems and services, and strengthening social norms that support children’s wellbeing.

What We Do

PUSKAPA thinks idealistically and acts strategically in:

Research and Publications

to understand, inform, and guide our actions

Advocacy and Capacity Building

to improve, evaluate, and promote evidence-based solutions through effective communication, technical assistance, and youth engagement

Program Management

to build sustainability through monitoring, organizational management, and implement our solutions

Starting PUSKAPA

The initiators of PUSKAPA observed that the issue of child wellbeing was often overlooked, misunderstood, and handled in a silo. In some shapes or forms, the work to protect children were largely based on good intentions than science. Consequently, programs and policies tend to be reactive and hard to measure.

Driven with aspirations to overcome the existing challenges, PUSKAPA was founded in 2010 at the Universitas Indonesia. Establishing PUSKAPA in a higher education institution was also to close the gap between academic and practical contributions.

From the outset, PUSKAPA was built on the idea of strengthening science in child protection, making evidence and scientific thinking the basis for our advocacy and action, engaging youth, and expanding cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration in tackling systemic barriers that affect child wellbeing.

We chose social protection and inclusion, legal identity and civil registration and vital statistics systems, and access to justice as our main research and advocacy agenda. Those agenda remain relevant and continue to grow to this day.

CHILD RIGHTS IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO START

“We can end inequality and injustice when policies and programs prevent and mitigate the consequences of poverty, violence, discrimination, and various socio-economic, climate, and environmental crises experienced by vulnerable children and families.”

Our 3 Pillars

Social Inclusion and Protection

We work to ease and expand children’s and marginalized individuals’ access to quality and comprehensive basic services, social care and protection, caregiving support, and handling of violence.

Akses terhadap Keadilan

Legal Identity and CRVS

We work so everyone is registered since birth, owns legal identity documents throughout their life cycle, and their data are governed to inform resources allocation and improve public services.

Identitas Hukum dan PS2H

Access to Justice

We work to ensure that systems and services uphold children's civil rights for participation, representation, rehabilitation, and reintegration, in and outside the law and justice system.

PUSKAPA TEAM

We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers, policy thinkers, and program implementers. We deliver quality and meaningful work, measure our results against the highest standards, own our failures, and use our resources effectively.

The road toward a safe, just, and inclusive society is long and steep. We embark on this journey with knowledge in our heads, determination in our hearts skills at hand, and just the right amount of energy to keep going.
